This article emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, planning, focus, and consistency in achieving academic success.
1. Know what works for you
Over time, one of the academic problems (Uni) students are struggling with is not knowing what works for them. However, to attain academic excellence one needs to have unique understanding of what works best for them. It prevents unnecessary stress and pressure. For instance, you may find it easier studying during the day, while your roommate find it difficult. Your friend loves watching movies few hours to exams? This might not be your style. If you dare try it, that is automatic failure.
How do you then know what works for you? You achieve this by trying everything out. With time, you will know what sits well with you and what do not. You might later find out you are a foodie type who can not read a minute without food or snacks conversing with your throat. If food is the only thing that motivates you to read, go for it because that is what works for you.
Self-discovery is one of the powerful tools that help students excel academically. Instead of being Jack of all trades who lives in confusion, be a master of one who knows their potential.
2. Create study guides and schedule
A timetable will suffice in creating study guides and schedule. Ascribe time to each courses. This prevents you from reading without direction. At least, you know which is next after another. Proper schedule aids understanding and quick retention. You can not imagine yourself jumping from one course to the other within the same period of time and you end up achieving nothing but confusion or probably a headache. That is bad right? Yes, it is exhausting. To avoid this, rule out your schedule.
3. Eliminate distractions
Disregard any factors that can distract you. You can not afford to be distracted while studying. It mars the study flow. Do away with your phone, headset, tablet, PC, etc, if necessary. Also, be aware of your environment. Is it a noisy or quiet one? The noisy one? You can deal with that. When dealing with noisy environment, I will recommend studying at the right time when it is quieter or train your focus. Minimize interruptions and make a conducive environment to maintain focus.
4. Break big study goals into small tasks
Breaking big study goals into small tasks make them easier to achieve. It makes them less overwhelmed. Define your goal clearly by splitting a course into parts (topics). After each task, take a break and test yourself. Practice questions, explore new ideas, and solve problems. At the end of each session, you should ask yourself these three questions: “What have I learnt so far?” “Did I accomplish my goal?” “Does this technique work for me?”. Then, answer those questions. Be honest with yourself. Don’t trick yourself — it won’t help.
5. Consistency
Make studying a habit. Study consistently, even if it is just 30 minutes a day. With time your brain will adapt and studying will feel natural and less like a chore. Be it a business owner, teacher, poet, data analyst, student, etc, we all need consistency as long as we want progress. At first, it may seem stressful, but by the time you start and being consistent, it has already become a habit. To be an excellent learner, you have to be consistent. No matter what, stick to your schedule. Being consistent means being reliable
