Are We Getting Educated for the Wrong Reasons?

Sometimes, I feel like education has become more of a pressure than something we genuinely want to do.

Think about it. How many of us would still want to go to school if there were no expectations from our parents, no fear of being looked down on, and no pressure from society to become graduates?

Sometimes, it feels like we’re in school because we want to be respected, because we don’t want to disappoint our parents, or because we don’t want people to see us as failures.

And honestly, there’s nothing wrong with wanting a certificate or hoping for a better life through education. We all want a future where our efforts pay off.

But how many of us genuinely want to learn, and how many of us are just trying to meet society’s expectations?

Sometimes, I wonder whether we would put the same energy into learning if our grades and certificates weren’t what people used to measure our intelligence or success. Some students are so afraid of failing that they forget why they started in the first place. Others are studying courses they never really wanted because they don’t want to disappoint their parents or because they’ve been made to believe that certain courses are more respectable than others.

Think about how much pressure students face to pass exams, graduate with good grades, and secure a good job afterwards. Sometimes, the focus becomes getting through school rather than actually understanding what we’re being taught. We memorise what we need for an exam, write it down, and forget it later. And somehow, we can still end up feeling like we’ve failed if we don’t meet the expectations placed on us.

I’m not saying education isn’t important. It is. But I think we need to ask ourselves whether we’re learning because we want to grow or simply because we feel we have no other choice.

I’m curious to know what you think. Are we pursuing education because we truly value learning, or because of the pressure that comes with not being educated?
