A page on Diphthongs from The Art of Articulation

Textbooks are a goldmine of knowledge, but how will students find them useful when their language is incomprehensible?

The goal of non-literary language, like the one used in textbooks, is to inform, not impress. Learners just want to understand linguistic, biological, mathematical, and other concepts. They don’t have to face the obstacle of obscurantism before they reach the knowledge they’re looking for.

Not all students have the mental capacity to scrape through pages of complex explanations or the resilience to reread lines that play hard to understand.

From my years of experience teaching both pre-university and university students, I’ve observed that many students are eager to learn and be excellent. They buy books and download pdfs. However, just a few are able to endure the mental exertion that comes with books written in obscure and almost literary language.

This is why, at Adroit Tutors, we make sure the books we produce are written in the simplest way possible, so that any learner, no matter their mental capacity, can find it useful.

For instance, attached is a page from our book on English Phonology The Art of Articulation. With our choice of very clear explanation, topics like vowel and consonant sounds, stress, intonation, syllable, homophones, etc. will be very easy for any reader to understand.

It’s suitable for both secondary school and university students.
