It’s the 15th of February.
I woke up with a mild sense of excitement. To be honest, life had been pretty boring since I got to school. My routine was almost predictable: from home to school, then church, tutorials, and back home again. Nothing particularly interesting ever happened, so I saw my visit to Brandon as something that would bring a temporary change to that routine. I also hoped that if he turned out to be as cool in person as he seemed over the phone, I might have found myself a friend I could visit occasionally.
I took my bath, picked out a shirt and wore a skirt. I didn’t want to overdress and give the impression that I was desperate to impress him, but I still wanted to look as nice as possible. I applied deodorant so I’d smell nice. Please, don’t get it all wrong. I did what I would do on any normal day, so don’t start imagining things. Haha.
I called Brandon to ask for his address. He gave it to me, and I headed towards the junction where I could get a bike to his place.
Fast-forward to the moment I arrived.
The room was cold, which was a relief considering the harmattan season we were experiencing. I sat on a chair while he remained on the bed. We talked about a lot of things and shared bits and pieces of our lives. He told me I looked even more beautiful in person than I did in pictures. Overall, he was just as cool as I’d imagined, and I was beginning to feel good about how things were going. It would be nice to have a close friend I could talk to freely, someone I could visit without having to think twice about it.
Unfortunately, I hadn’t fully considered what it might feel like to be alone in a room with a guy I was already beginning to like.
Perhaps the tension of the moment was getting to me. There was just something about how effortlessly cool Brandon was that could make a girl experience pelvic contractions. Yes, I said it. Haha.
Throughout my stay, he barely moved from his bed. He didn’t introduce any sexual topics into our conversation, and boy, did I appreciate his level of understanding! Whenever he spoke, you could tell there was intelligence beneath his casual manner. He wasn’t trying too hard to impress me; he was simply being himself, and that was part of what made him attractive.
I’m not going to deny that I was beginning to feel something for him. But no! I had my dignity and pride to protect. Still, deep down, I was hoping he would…
“I’m sure I’ve kept you way longer than you thought you’d want to stay, babe,” he said, interrupting my thoughts.
Was he serious?
I could have stayed much longer, but I wasn’t about to let him know that my mind was already wandering into places I hadn’t planned to visit. I wanted to act as though everything was perfectly normal.
“Oh, it’s fine. I’ll leave in a few minutes,” I replied with a fake smile.
“On that note, maybe you’d give me a hug before you go?” he asked politely. “Oh, if that’s fine with you, please,” he quickly added.
I smiled. “It’s okay. I can do that.”
He stood up for the first time since I arrived and walked towards me. In those few seconds it took him to reach me, I had already scanned through his physique. He was of average height, with broad shoulders and a moderately large chest.
I felt like I was melting into the chair.
And no, it wasn’t because he had some extraordinary physique that would automatically turn a girl on. No six-packs, no perfectly sculpted abs, or any of those things people go crazy about. I just happen to be the kind of person who falls for emotional intelligence more than physical appearance. There’s something about a guy who knows how to communicate, understands people, and carries himself with a certain level of maturity that gets to me.
Besides, some guys with well-built bodies seem to have a tendency to act insensibly. No offence to the sensible ones among them. Haha.
But before you start blaming Brandon for what happened next, let me make something clear: I am not going to put the blame on him. As I mentioned earlier, I believe my own vulnerability played a significant role in what followed. And, of course, he possessed some of the qualities I found attractive.
He moved closer, and I could feel a strange chill in my body.
“Kindly stand up, dear,” he whispered, his voice carrying a hint of shyness.
I stood up, and he wrapped his arms around me, gently drawing me against his chest. My heart began racing. I slowly put my arms around his waist, noticing that he was slightly taller than me.
We remained in that embrace for about forty seconds before he pulled back a little, leaving his arms around my neck. We looked into each other’s eyes, and for a brief moment, neither of us seemed interested in looking away.
Then something happened.
It was as though the distance between our lips suddenly became insignificant. We leaned towards each other, and our lips met.
We kissed.
And it felt so good that I couldn’t help myself.
“Hmmm…” I moaned.
