ARE YOU GROWING, OR ARE YOU JUST GETTING OLDER?

Grab your chair and move closer because I am about to break tables.

Truth be told, there was a time in my life when I would celebrate my birthday, wake up every day, live through different experiences, and move from one day to another. Life was happening, and I was living it. But looking back, I realised that I had no real structure, no clear plan, and no system to keep me in check.

I was busy, but was I growing? I was living, but was I making meaningful progress?

At some point, I realised that I could keep getting older without necessarily becoming better. I could spend another year of my life doing different things without being intentional about the person I was becoming.

And that made me think.

Every year, you celebrate your birthday. You count the years, take pictures, receive messages, cut cakes, make wishes, and perhaps gather with friends and loved ones to celebrate another year of your life.

But beyond the celebrations, the pictures, the wishes, and the excitement, have you ever paused to ask yourself a simple question?

Are you growing, or are you just getting older?

Because there is a difference between the two.

Getting older happens naturally. You don’t have to work for it. The days pass, the months roll by, and before you know it, another year has been added to your age.

But growth? Growth requires intentionality.

Are you growing spiritually? Has your relationship with God deepened? Has your understanding of His Word increased? Are you becoming more disciplined in your walk with Him, or are you simply moving through the years without paying attention to the state of your spiritual life?

Are you growing emotionally? How do you respond when you are offended? How do you handle disappointment, rejection, correction, and misunderstanding? Are you learning to communicate your feelings better, or do you still allow every unpleasant experience to dictate your reactions?

Are you growing academically? Beyond your grades, are you improving in your understanding, developing your thinking, and learning to apply what you study? Are you becoming more intentional about your education, or are you simply attending classes, writing examinations, and moving from one semester to another?

What about your relationships with people? Are you learning to communicate better, understand others, and handle disagreements maturely? Are you becoming a better friend, or do you keep repeating the same mistakes in your relationships?

What about your dreams, your zeal for greatness, and your desire to succeed? Are you taking deliberate steps towards the things you say you want, or are you simply getting busier with different activities without making meaningful progress?

You can be busy and still be stagnant.

You can have dreams without a plan, desires without discipline, and ambitions without a system to support them.

And the truth is, being occupied is not the same as being productive. Neither is activity the same as growth.

At some point, you must be willing to examine not just what you are doing, but what your actions are producing in you.

Keep pushing; I am rooting for you.
